Northern California

Students who come to Northern California will enjoy area attractions including San Francisco, the Golden Gate bridge, Santa Cruz, Carmel and Monterey, and more. Students always comment that Northern California is peaceful and very picturesque. It is one of the most beautiful areas in the United States.

ISP is happy to offer four outstanding programs in Northern California: homestay placements for college students, shared housing placements for certain college students, high school homestay placements, and guardianship services for minor students. We also offer special programs for UC Santa Cruz students.

Homestay Placements for College Students

ISP is proud to have hundreds of active and eager host families in Northern California. Hosts are a variety of ages and can be families with children, single adults, couples without children, single parents, and retired people. In addition, hosts come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, which represents the diversity of the U.S.

Our screening process for new host families is rigorous. All host families are interviewed in their homes by an area coordinator prior to being accepted to the program. We seek to ensure that students will have a positive and supportive environment.

We place college students with host families in all areas of California. Students should apply to ISP at least 4–6 weeks before arrival.

Short-Term Programs in Santa Cruz

Throughout the year, ISP places short-term groups with host families in Santa Cruz. Please contact us for pricing information and applications for these programs.

Shared Housing

For Students Attending Foothill College, De Anza College,
and UC Davis Extension International Programs

Shared Housing units are local homes that have been converted to student housing. Students will have a private bedroom and share the common areas including the kitchen and entertainment room with fellow students and their landlord. Lease terms are for a minimum of six months. Typically, Shared Housing units accommodate one to seven students and are furnished to include a bed, desk, dresser, and lighting.

Landlords typically live on site and assist students with local resources, help with local transportation options, provide assistance in emergencies, etc. Students are assigned an ISP Area Coordinator who meets the students monthly.

Students who wish to be independent yet have the support of their landlords and ISP Area Coordinator are attracted to this program. The demand for Shared Housing is extremely high and space is limited, so please check with us for availability.

Friendship Service
If requested, an ISP staff member will provide the services listed below for Shared Housing students and their families. The price for the service is $150. Typically, we arrange to spend two to three hours with each student. Services include:

  • Initial shopping trip for for food and necesesities
  • Area orientation
  • Explanation of bus system with maps and timetables
  • Personal contact for the student throughout the duration of the contract

High School Homestay Placements

This program is for students who have obtained an I-20 from a high school on their own and would only like a homestay placement. Typically, ISP places students within 3–5 miles of their high schools with families that have knowledge of the high school program. ISP places students in this program in both Northern and Southern California.

ISP High School Coordinator
ISP's high school coordinator works closely with the students to be sure that their academic studies and homestay experiences are successful. Three times per year, the ISP high school coordinator will personally meet with the students and their host families and write a report that is sent to the student's families.

Guardianship Services for Minor Students

ISP also offers guardianship service for minor children studying in the U.S. for one or more academic years. Students do not need to be enrolled in the ISP program in order to qualify. Many middle schools and high schools require an assigned guardian in order for a foreign student to be enrolled. ISP can offer this! If you are interested in this service, please contact our office for more information.
